The Supreme Court & Marriage Rights

LGBT activist Andrea Crain and GLN’s Andy Thayer explore what the recent Supreme Court rulings on marriage rights for same-sex couples mean for the future of LGBT rights both in Illinois and nationally.

Examined are the pitfalls of the Court’s rulings and why we can’t be complacent about actually achieving the legal equality that seems so very close. Also discussed is why the marriage rights battle carries far more importance to LGBTs beyond just the specific rights that come with it.

Like the battle over petty symbols of racial segregation in the old South – segregated drinking fountains, lunch counters and the like – the battle over marriage rights is about the forcible humiliation of an entire community, and the far more serious discrimination and violence that this government-endorsed humiliation fosters. Also included on the show are many pictures from a July 5th equal marriage rights rally in Kankakee, IL.
